Outlook password recovery depends entirely on whether you need to unlock your online email account or an offline data file stored on your computer.

If you forgot the password to log into your email account online, Microsoft secures your data using encrypted hashes. This means Microsoft cannot see or send your original password; you must reset it entirely.
