A bouncy ball (also known as a rubber ball or super ball) is a small, spherical toy made from highly elastic materials that rebounds energetically when thrown or dropped against hard surfaces. Thanks to their extreme elasticity, these toys can retain up to 90% of their kinetic energy upon impact, allowing them to bounce extraordinarily high. They have a rich history spanning from ancient Mesoamerican sports to the mid-20th-century toy craze. The History and Origin

Ancient Beginnings: Natural rubber originated in the Americas. Indigenous Mesoamerican cultures created rubber balls thousands of years ago for their traditional ballgames. Christopher Columbus famously documented Haitians playing with them in 1495.

The 1964 Breakthrough: The modern era of bouncy balls began when California chemist Norman Stingley accidentally invented an ultra-elastic synthetic rubber compound while experimenting with compressed polybutadiene.

The Super Ball Craze: Toy giant Wham-O purchased Stingley’s invention, naming it the Super Ball. It was manufactured under massive heat and 3,500 psi of pressure. It became a massive hit because a single hard throw could launch it over a three-story building. The Science Behind the Bounce
